  • The "Tariff of Abominations"

    The Tariff of 1828, also known as the "Tariff of Abominations" was passed to protect the industrialized trade economy in the North and West. This Tariff negatively affected the South by raising the general cost of living since the South relied a significant amount on Imports.
  • Tariff of 1832

    The Tariff of 1832 was passed in an attempt to edit the Tariff of 1828 to make it more accepting of South Carolina's economy. However, the Tariff only lowered the cost of living by a minimal amount.
  • The Ordinance of Nullification

    The South Carolina legislature adapted the Ordinance of Nullification and declared the Tariff of 1828 to be "null and void". South Carolina believed the Tariff was unconstitutional and they had the right to not enforce it.
  • The Nullification Proclamation

    President Jackson issued a public proclamation warning South Carolina that they need to enforce the Tariff or force will be used against them.
  • The South Carolina Exposition and Protest

    The South Carolina State legislature issued the South Carolina Exposition and Protest, which essentially declared that the Tariff of 1828 will not be enforced by South Carolina.
  • The Compromise Tariff of 1833

    The Compromise Tariff was passed as a final and successful attempt to lower the tariffs enough to not continue raising the cost of living in the South.
  • The Force Act

    The Force Act was passed in Congress to allow the president to employ the use of force if a state refuses to enforce Congressional laws.
