Gutenberg died in 1468 and was buried in the Franciscan church at Mainz, his contributions largely unknown. This church and the cemetery were later destroyed, and Gutenberg's grave is now lost.

He began work on a commission for Cardinal Raffaele Riario to make a statue of the Roman wine god, Bacchus. However, upon completion, the work was rejected by the cardinal, and subsequently entered the collection of the banker Jacopo Galli, for his garden.

The French ambassador in the Holy See commissioned one of his most famous works, the Pietà. Michelangelo sculpted it, and when it was done he was payed extra for his hard work.

He was asked to complete an unfinished project that began 40 years earlier by Agostino di Duccio: a colossal statue portraying David as a symbol of Florentine freedom. Michelangelo responded by completing his most famous work, the Statue of David in 1504.

It tended to feature a pious Virgin smiling down on an infant held in her arms. Instead, Jesus stands upright, almost unsupported, only loosely held by Mary's left hand, and appears to be about to step away from his mother and into the world. Meanwhile, Mary does not cling to her son or even look at him, but gazes down and away, as if she knows already what her son's fate is.

Michelangelo died in his home in Rome. He was 88 years old when he died. It was 3 weeks before his 89th birthday. He died of natural causes.
