He becomes the First Secretary of the U.S.S.R., instead of Malenkov. He had gained control of the party machinery, giving him the upper hand to take the position of leadership. One of his first commands as leader of the U.S.S.R. was to execute one of Stalin's former supporters. -

Nikita ceases to be the leader
Due to his failure to gain an advantage over the U.S. in the Cuban conflict, the Central Committee removed Krushchev from power. His removal wasn't a major issue, so he was able to peaceably live in Moscow for the remaining years of his life. -

He died from natural causes.
