    All Jews are forced from their homes. The first group departs by train.

  • Elie arrives at camp

    Late May: They reache Birkenau, and Elie and his father spend their first night in camp. Guards send Elie and his father to Auschwitz.

  • Elie has surgery

    Elie undergoes surgery in the Auschwitz infirmary. Elie and his father run with evacuees to Gleiwitz, where they and others board open cattle cars for a ten-day ride to Buchenwald.
