Birthday and Location
Niels Henrik David Bohr was born on the Seventh of October 1885 in Copenhagen, Denmark. -
Education
Bohr enrolled at the University of Copenhagen in 1903, where he never had a doubt that he would study physics. -
Education
Bohr obtained his doctorate during this time with his dissertation on the electron theory of metals. -
Postdoctoral Research
During this time, Bohr's first contribution to the emerging new idea of Quantum physics started in England, with Ernest Rutherford at the University of Manchester. -
The Philosophical Magazine and The Atomic Model
At this time, "Bohr felt compelled to postulate, in substantive trilogy of articles. Articles included that of electrons could only occupy particular orbits determined by the quantum of action and that electromagnetic radiation from an atom occurred only when an electron jumped to a lower-energy orbit. Amongst this time Bohr's Atomic model was able to account for an ever-increasing number of experimental data, famously starting with the spectral line series emitted by hydrogen."(Aaserud) -
Professorship
In the spring of 1916, Bohr was offered a new professorship at the University of Copenhagen; dedicated to theoretical physics -
Nobel Prize
With the work that was put in in 1913's trilogy, "Bohr had sought to apply his theory to the understanding of the periodic table of elements. He improved upon that aspect of his work into the early 1920s, by which time he had developed an elaborate scheme building up the periodic table by adding electrons one after another to the atom according to his atomic model..."(Aaserud). -
Throughout Time
As the years passed and the war grew, Bohr received a secret message from British colleague James Chadwick. in the fall Bohr was on a boat to get on a military flight in Scotland to London to then be briefed about the Allied Atomic Bomb Project. -
Bohr Returns to Denmark
As Bohr was on the project for years he was told to stay within the protection of the United States to be told he can go home after the bomb was dropped in August 1945. When Bohr made it home he was welcomed as a hero with his duties along side on the project. -
Death of Neils Bohr
Bohr died in the confines of his own home in Copenhagen following a stroke.
