Niels bohr

Niels Bohr 10/7/1885 – 11/18/1962

  • Birth

Niels Henrik David Bohr was born in the city of Copenhagen, Denmark. The son of Christian Bohr, and Ellen Adler Bohr.
  • Collage

    Collage
Bohr is accepted to the university of Copenhagen where he will conduct most of his life work.
  • PhD

Bohr earned his doctorate in physics the field where he will make his greatest impact on the world.
  • The Bohr Model

    The Bohr Model
Bohr begins studying the atom picking up where Rutherford had left off and utilizing the emerging field of quantum mechanics. Bohr developed the Bohr model of the atom placing electrons outside of the nucleus in a solar system like configuration. The electrons having specific quanta of energy for each state. This revolutionized the atomic world and even though an updated model has since been published it is still a useful tool. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1LDJUu4nko)
  • Nobel Prize

    Nobel Prize
Bohr was awarded the Nobel prize for his work on the structure of the atom. Niels Bohr. “On the Constitution of Atoms and Molecules”. Philosophical Magazine, for November 1913, Part 3, pg. 858 – pg. 875
  • Atomic Orbitals

    Atomic Orbitals
Erwin Schrodinger develops a 3-dimensional model of the electron orbital. Even being one of Schrodinger’s accomplishments this directly ties to Bohr’s work. The Atomic Orbital rectified issues that’s Bohr’s model brought forth. This discovery created another paradigm shift in the study of the atom just 13 years later after the Bohr model
  • Copenhagen interpretation

    Copenhagen interpretation
Niels Bohr worked along side Werner Heisenberg to develop the what is known in later years as the Copenhagen Interpretation. their research describes the collapse of the wave function upon its observation. classically tested through the double slit experiment. Even though Bohr began his work in physics with scientist attempting to develop well defined explanations of the world, Bohr was accepting that the world of particle physics was much more gray than previously predicted.
  • Nuclear Weapons Proliferation

    Nuclear Weapons Proliferation
Bohr writes and open letter to the united nations stating that physics and science alike should be used for the betterment of mankind. Even though being a veteran of the Manhattan project Bohr advocated the usage of nuclear energy in more peaceful ways. History shows that his efforts were to no avail, however; his concerns as a physicist spoke volumes through history.
  • Death

Niels Bohr passed away in the city of Copenhagen, Denmark.
