    Nuevo Amanecer becomes EWB-USA Program
    The urban community of Nuevo Amanecer from Matagalpa, Nicaragua is officially approved as an EWB-USA program. The community requests that the first project within the program address the issue of household air pollution.
  • EWB-GT acquires the Nuevo Amanecer Program

    EWB-GT acquires the Nuevo Amanecer Program
    The "Cookstoves" research group that had been part of the EWB-GT since 2012 applies to adopt Nuevo Amanecer and officially acquires it shortly after the program becomes official.
  • EWB-GT Approved for travel to Nicaragua

    After three months of intense paperwork preparation, EWB-GT is approved for its first visit to meet the community in Matagalpa.
  • First Assessment Trip

    First Assessment Trip
    Five students from the EWB-GT Nicaragua Program travel to Matagalpa to meet the NGO, Rayo de Sol, and the community.
    The goal was to establish relations with the community and NGO and assess the community's needs. EWB-GT performed air quality monitoring in 10 homes, tested water sources for bacterial contamination, and performed surveys with over 50 community members.

    Community, NGO, and EWB-GT sign PPA
    The President of the Parent's Committee for the 15 de semptiembre primary school (the community-based organization), Director of Rayo de Sol (the NGO), and Program Lead for the EWB-GT team sign the Project Partnership Agreement to solidify the collaboration between the groups and officially name "Clean Cooking Solutions" as the first project to be implemented in the community.
  • Prototype Building

    Prototype Building
    During the Spring 2015 semesters, the Nicaragua Program is building two stoves that will reduce emissions and reflect the community's desires for a a new cookstove. The first prototype is a portable rocket stove made from metal and insulated with a light weight concrete. The second prototype is a standing stove that includes areas for both a pot and a plancha and requires a chimney to direct the smoke out of the home.
