Samuel J Battle was born on January 16, 1883 and died on August 7, 1966. He had moved to New York from North Carolina and took a job as a train porter before he began studying for the NYPD civil service exam.

The first female police officer/detective of New York is Isabella Goodwin. She was born on February 20, 1865 and died on October 26, 1943. When she first started she was mostly cleaning jail cells and supervising inmates rather than dealing with crimes.
