    After the voting age was lowered from 21 years old to 18 years old by the 26th amendment, most states lowered their drinking age in the early 70's. By 1975 all but 12 states lowered their drinking age, including New York.

    The high number of driving fatalities encouraged New York to increase its drinking age from 18 years old to 19 years old.
  • National Minimum Drinking Age Act

    National Minimum Drinking Age Act
    In 1984 congress passed the National Minimum Drinking Age Act, which required states to raise their drinking age to 21 or they would lose 10 percent of their highway funds. New York raised the age to 21 on December 1st that same year.
