Netflix was founded by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph. They worked for a company that was going through a merger and feared they would be out of a job. Amazon was an inspiration for them and they came up with Netflix.

Netflix.com came to life. They started with DVD rental and sales. Shortly after they added the paid monthly subscription so customers could get unlimited DVD rentals with no worry of a late fee.

Netflix started using a rating system. After a customer watched a movie they could add their rating. There would be a queue with movies that were recommended for the customer based on their ratings.

Netflix is ready to expand so Reed and Marc go public. The IPO raises $82.1 million and values Netflix at $309.7 million.

Netflix begins streaming content through it's Watch Now Service. The content is delivering directly to TVs, computers, and tablets. A couple years later Netflix partners with SmartTV and gaming consoles.

Over 209 million subscribers in over 109 countries. Not only steaming popular TV shows but also Netflix Originals that only can be seen with a subscription to Netflix. Dvd brick and mortar rental stores are now obsolete.
