Neils Bohr: 7 Oct 1885 - 18 Nov 1962

  • Niels Bohr earns his Doctorate.

Niels Bohr enrolled at the University of Copenhagen in 1903 to begin his studies in Physics. In 1911 Niels Bohr earned his doctorate with a dissertation on the electron theory of metals.
  • Niels Bohr's first contribution

In 1912 Bohr began to further his research in a new idea of quantum physics at the University of Manchester along with Ernest Rutherford. During their studies they found that an atom consists of a positively charged nucleus that is circled by negatively charged electrons. With that information Bohr came up with what we call the Bohr Atomic model. The model was able to produce a rising amount of experimental data even though other physicists weren't really on board with the idea at the time.
  • Niels Bohr's Institute.

In 1916 Bohr became a professor in theoretical physics at the University of Copenhagen. Displeased with the area he had to work with, in 1917 Bohr requested another institute dedicated to theoretical physics. Bohr had his institute in 1921. Like Bohr wanted, he was able to create an institute that allowed the opportunity for young aspiring physicists to come up with new ideas. Video- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fm2C0ovz-3M
  • Niels Bohr receives the Nobel Prize

In 1922 Niels Bohr was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. It was established by a couple physicists at Bohr's institute that the at that time undiscovered element 72 would behave as predicted by Bohr's theory. That added strength to Bohr's theory and allowed it to become accepted fully, changing the way elements would be studied. Reference:
