7,700 years ago, Klamath indians lived around Crater Lake. The native americans believed that is was a sacred area. They tried to shield Crater Lake from white explorers. They thought it was just a place for praying and for spiritual purposes. They didn't want other people taking advantage of the beautiful area. They succeeded for a long time.

Before Crater Lake was the beautiful lake that it is today, it was a volcano. This volcano was called Mount Mazama. Mount Mazama erupted and collapsed into a caldera. A caldera is a deep crater. The crater was 1,946 feet deep. This is how we get the name Crater Lake.

When the 12,000-foot-tall volcano erupted, it created a crater. It was not a lake yet. Up on the mountains of Oregon where the Crater Lake sits, it gets a lot of snowfall. The snowfall melts and becomes the clear beautiful water that we have in it today. Believe it or not, Crater Lake is still being filled up with water. It keeps snowing, and the snow melts, and the snow becomes water. The crater became a lake.

A group of people looking for gold found Crater Lake. They named it the great blue lake. After admiring it, they left.
