Reading has always been a popular hobby in my family. My mom used to read to me every day when I was little. In the beginning I just listened, but as I got older I would follow along and point to pictures.

I don't remember the name of the book, but I remember how much I loved it! The very first book I could "read" was about a baby chicken on a farm that wanted to be a rooster. I had it memorized and I used to carry it around and make people listen to me "read". I was so proud!

My mom wanted me to be able to spell my name on the first day of school. She made me sit at my breakfast table FOREVER writing my name. ELIZABETH. I was so jealous of my friends with short names.

We played a lot of word games in my family growing up. Trivial Pursuit, Scattergories, OutBurst, etc.

I grew tired of girly books. A teacher of mine read an excerpt from London's book and I loved it. I went to the library to get it and the librarian told me I was too young to get through the book. I checked it out anyway and read it in two days.

I had to read Brave New World for my college prep class. I hated it with a passion, but my teacher used my quizzes as examples for the class saying that I really understood the book and read for understanding. I found it interesting that I was good and doing something that made me pretty miserable. I started thinking about studying English in college.

The first time I planned a lesson from a novel to teach live. We group taught this book during Teaching Reading to Adolescents in my undergrad.
