    Social activist from 1940-1967. Spoke out against segregation before the big civil rights movement, and he was a mentor for Martin Luther King Jr.
  • 1946 Governor's Race

    1946 Governor's Race
    Also known as the Three Governor's Controversy. Herman Talmadge, Melvin Thompson, and Ellis Arnall all claimed that they should be governor when Eugene Talmadge died in office. Herman Telmadge was a secret canidate, and went around in rural areas looking for votes to sneek into office. They had another election and Herman won.
  • Herman Telmage

    Herman Telmage
    He was the child of Eugene Talmadge and governor of Georgia from 1947-1955. He was a democrat and was part of the Three Governors Controversy.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Segragation in MississippiThe Supreme court decided that segregating children in public schools was against the constitution, and it started a huge uprise in the civil rights movement. For the first time, the constitution was on their side.
  • 1956 State Flag

    The flag was made by a person who supported segregation, and it was used as a symbol for many white supremacist groups. It contains the confederate battle flag symbol which repersents what the Confederacy fought for.
  • Sibley Commission

    The federal government ordered Georgia public schools to allow colored people into them, but because it was very unpopular, it was delayed and avoided many times. The governor was forced to cut off funding to schools if they integrated.

    SNCC in SelmaThe Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee was an orginization that used peaceful protests to fight for the rights of colored people in the American Civil Rights Movement.

    Many African Americans gathered in Albany, including MLK, and protested for civil rights. They failed to improve relations, but went on to win in Birmingham.

    March on Washington Video250,000 people marched in Washington D.C, for civil rights for African Americans. MLK made his "I Have a Dream" speech there. It was the biggest march durring the Civil Rights Movement.

    MLK BiographyHe was a leader in the the American Civil Rights Movement, and used nonviolent civil disobedience to get the point across. Very powerful leader at the time. He was assasinated.

    Rasist ManHe was the mayor of Georgia, and wanted segregation. Improved black employment, but he was a segregationist and caused a huge step back in the civil rights movement.

    Helped improve race relations in Atlanta. Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport was renamed after him.
