Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most prominent acvtivists during the Civil Rights Era. He believed in peace and never used violence agaisnt anyone, even if they used vioelence on him first. He was asasinated on April 4, 1968.

When governor elect Eugene Talmadge died, the General Assembly appointed his son, Herman Talmadge as governor. The lieutenant governor elect, Melvin Thompson, objected and claimed that he should be the new governor. Outgoing governor Ellis Arnall also refused to leave the office. The 1944 case of Smith vs. Allwright was the Supreme Court decision that ruled the Texas White Primary was unconstitutional. This led to the removal of the White Primary system ion many other states as well.

Eugene Talmadge won his fourth election for governor, but died before being sworn in. The General Assembly elected Herman Talmadge as governor. This led to the "three governors controversy." Herman Talmadge took office as governor in January 1947; two months later the Georgia Supreme Court ruled that the legislature had acted in an unconstitutional manner. Talmadge immediately vacated the office and prepared to run for governor against Melvin Thompson in a special election, and won.

Andrew Young was a trusted aide to Martin Luther King Jr., eventually rising to the executive directorship of the SCLC. He was instrumental in organizing voter registration and desegregation campaigns in Albany; Birmingham and Selma, Alabama; and Washington, D.C., among other places.

In 1955 the Atlanta attorney and state Democratic Party leader John Sammons Bell began a campaign to substitute the square Confederate battle flag for the red and white bars on Georgia's state flag. Some legislators favored the adoption of a standard state flag as an appropriate way to mark the upcoming100 year anniversary of the Civil War. Since most people were occupied the resostance to stop integration, the flag passed thrpugh easily.
