MIT Timeline

  • Founding of MIT

    Founding of MIT
The Massachusetts Institute of Technolgy was founded in 1861 by William Barton Rodgers (the first president of the college) in Cambridge Massachusetts.
  • First Classes

    First Classes
The first classes are held at MIT.
  • First Graduating Class

    First Graduating Class
MIT's first graduating class consisted of thirteen students.
  • MIT's First Female Student

    MIT's First Female Student
Ellen Swallow Richards is the first female student at MIT. She was admitted after graduating from Vassar College in 1870 with a Bachelor's in Chemistry. Richards graduated from MIT in 1873.
  • MIT's First Wind Tunnel

    MIT's First Wind Tunnel
Albert J. Wells invents MIT's firt wind tunnel using the school's existing ventilation system.
  • MIT's Solar House

    MIT's Solar House
MIT Professor of Chemical Engineering Hoyt C. Hottel oversees the building of Americas first solar powered house. This house was known as "solar I."
  • Beggining of the Magnetic-Memory Core

In 1947 Jay Forrester began to try to create a tyoe of memory system. The biggestest set back for computers of this time was the memory design which allowed for only a small amout of storage.
  • First Designs for the Magnetic-Memory Core

Forrester began supervising his student William Papian on designs for the Magnetic Memory Core. Papian's master's thesis was "A Coincident-Current Magnetic Memory Unit," completed in August 1950 it described the concept of magnetic-core memories and showed how the cores could be combined in planar arrays, which could in turn be connected into three-dimensional assemblies.
  • Implimenting Core Storage

The Magnetic-Memory Core was installed into a Whirlwind. This improved memeory allowed the machine to be used in other applications and drastically improved the Whirlwind's performance.
  • Creation of The TX-0

    Creation of The TX-0
Lincon Labrotories creates the transistorized experimental computer 0 also known as the TX-0. The memory drive currents are made out of a combination of vacuum tubes and transistors that made it the first state of the art machine.
  • First Head-Mount Display

    First Head-Mount Display
Ivan Sutherland an MIT graduate created the first computer-based head-mounted display. This display was mounted on the ears and used reflecting mirrors to display images into the users eyes. Most of the system was attached to the ceiling which is why it earned the name "Swords of Damocles."
  • Artifical Skin

    Artifical Skin
In 1969 MIT Graduate Ioannis V. Yannas works along side the Massachusetts General Hospital to create some of the first aftifical skin.
  • MIT's Start in Artifical Intellegence

MIT begins to create and improve atrifical intelligence. This seperated from project MAC and became it's own program shorty after.
  • Beggining of MIT Information Services and Technology

the MIT Information Services and Technology was created under the supervision of the senior vice president in January 1983. This was accomplished at MIT by bringing the Institute’s Information Processing Services and Telecommunications Systems organizations into one program.
  • MIT Developments in Human Geonomes

MIT students along wtih the WhiteHead Insitute map over 16,000 human genes.
