Mission Project

  • Pioneer

    Pioneer
-began in 1972 and went until 2003.
-Nobody knows where it's located, we can't make contact with the satelites anymore.
-explored the Sun, Jupiter, Saturn and Venus.
-We gathered a lot of information from many of the missions.
-It was meannt to last longer than it did. We just lost contact with the very weak satelite.
-1. There were many different satelites, I thought there would be just one. 2. Some failed, while others succeeded. 3. Was the first for many.
  • Voyager

    Voyager
    -Launched in 1977
-Current location is 18.7 billion km from the sun.
-Explore all of the outer planets
-Yes, we got a lot of information from the two missions about many different planets.
    -No
    - 1.There were two of the same missions. 2. They werew able to travel so far. 3. They weren't supposed to last as long as they did.
  • Galileo

    Galileo
    -1989-2003
-Meant to study Jupiter, got sucked into the atmosphere and was destroyed.
-No the mission wasn't sucessful, it ended up crashing into Jupiter.
-The mission went completely wrong. The spacecraft wasn't meant to land on Jupiter, or crash into it.
    - 1. Went so long without crashing. 2. Some information was sent back before the crash. 3. First to fly past an asteroid.
  • Cassini Solstice

    Cassini Solstice
    -1997-2017
    -Near Titan
-Study saturn and all of its moons.
-Very sucessful. NASA got a lot of its information it needed plus some.
-A surprise could be that it did what it needed to in half the amount of time.
    - 1. It was meant to be in space for 4 years when it only needed 2. 2. Has studied six parts of Saturn. 3. Still in space many years later.
  • ACE

    ACE
    -Launched in 1997
-Has been at L1 for 15 years now. Three types of maneuvers keep it going.
-Measure and compare several samples of matter
-Yes, years later the space craft is still in space gathering what it needs to.
    -No
    - 1.Has enough fuel to last until 2024. 2. Moves very slowly. 3. Some information was lost.
  • Stardust

    Stardust
    -1999-2006
-Orbiting the earth, gathering information on comets.
-Gather particle samples from Comet Wild 2 and interstellar dust.
-Yes, we got all of the information we inteded to.
    - Everything was right.
    - 1. Landed on a moving comet. 2. Collected a lot of interstellar dust. 3. Very small
  • Genesis

    Genesis
    -Active from August 2000-September 2004
-Traveled millions of miles to "L1" and made Halo Orbits around the sun.
    -Purpose: Observe solar wind
-Yes the mission was sucessful. It collected 850 days of solar wind and found many things.
-Everything went as planned and there were no surprises.
    - 1. Collected many types of solar wind. 2. Traveled 20 million miles. 3. Collected many ions.
  • Odyssey

    Odyssey
    -2001
-Mars, when Earth and Mars aligned, Odyssey was launched.
-Detect water, shallow buried ice, and study radiation.
-Very sucessful. Found what Mars was made of and made maps.
    -Everything worked out fine.
    - 1. How can a small machine create a map? 2. Relays information home. 3. Spent two years on the planet.
  • Messenger

    Messenger
    -August 2005-current
-Flew by Earth, Venus and Mercury to get where it needs to be, now it orbits mercury.
-To get a better understanding of Mercury with all of MESSENGER'S instruments.
    -Solar panels
-Yes, we learn more and more with this mission. It's one of the only ones that has gone to Mercury.
-Everything is going according to plan
    - 1. Surprised it works off of just solar panels. 2. Hardly anything to it for it ro work so well. 3. Can go in and out of "safe" mode.
  • Reconnaissance

    Reconnaissance
    -2005-present
-Located on Mars. Was sent when Mars and Earth lined up.
    -Find water
-has found traces of water, so it's somewhat successful.
    -Everything is going well.
-1. Has enough fuel to last many years. 2. Camera is one of the largest ever flown on a planetary mission. 3. Looked for where martians might be able to live.
