Michael Matheson Innovators and Inventions Timeline

  • George Westinghouse gets his start

In late of this year, George Westinghouse receives his first patent for his rotary steam invention. This invention turned out not to be practical, but this go him into inventing. He turned his intrests over and invented the air brake system in a train. This was a huge invention that greatly helped the railroads. He also got 38 patents for his inventions in natural gas piping systems.
  • George Wesinghouse's impact on America

George Westinghouse helped the US grow economically. He helped us economically with his air brake systems aiding the railroad industry which made shipping products by train much safer and a lower risk of derailing. This helped us by growing the railroad industry and ensuring the safety of the shipping supplies. He also furthered the US's economics with his gas piping inventions. This helped people get their natural gas piped safer, making them more inclined to pipe them, growing the business.
  • Invention of Blue Jeans

In this year, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis invented blue jeans. These men were inspired during the gold rush and the 49ers, who were the people mining during the gold rush. The patent was officialized on May 20, 1873. This invention effected our nation by the technological side of clothing. Construction in general required tough clothing, so blue jeans were in high demand for construction workers, so they could protect themselves.
  • Invention of Fountain Pen

During this year, Lewis E. Waterman invented the fountain pen in Decatur, New York. This was a major breakthrough in the writing industry because for a century, people were writing with a quill and a jar of ink. This also progressed the technology of writing because this pen was better for travel because people didn't have to carry around a jar of ink anymore, which was messy. This also made it more accessible because you can carry a pen in your pocket without a jar of ink to carry around.
  • Nikola tesla starts to invent on his own

In this year, Nikola Tesla quit his job working for Thomas Edison and started off on his own. He left because Edison told him that he would pay Tesla $50,000 for a new invention. He had one, and Edison didn't pay him saying it was a joke, and Tesla quit shortly after. This was important because if Tesla didn't quit, electricity and energy might not be the way it is. When Tesla started his own business, he revolutionized energy technology through alternating current and his Tesla coil.
