Cheryle Rebholz, former member of the Mequon-Thiensville school board and local business owner, opposed many of John Wirth's policies and decided to challenge him for mayor.

On Jan. 28, 2019, Kim Steinbrenner withdrew from the mayoral race after originally filing to have her name listed on the ballot. Steinbrenner went on to endorse Rebholz.

The primary election was held in Mequon and narrowed the field from three candidates to two.

Candidate John Wirth led the race after the primary election. Wirth received 1,936 votes (just over 60%).

Candidate Brian Schneider received the second most votes in the primary election, securing his place as Wirth's competitor. Schneider received 781 votes (just over 25%).

Cheryle Rebholz was eliminated from the race after the primary election. Rebholz received only 414 votes (just under 13%).

On April 2, voters had the opportunity to choose Mequon’s new mayor. Polls opened at 7 a.m. and closed at 8 p.m. The ballot contained candidates Brian Schneider and John Wirth. Roughly 48% of citizens turned out to vote.

John Wirth won the election to become the next mayor of Mequon. Wirth received 4,704 total votes (roughly 58%).
