Sportswear in the 1970's
In the 1970's, sportswear, or active clothing, for men included shorter shorts that were around the 3-4 inch inseam that we normally see in women's athletic wear today. For tops, tighter t-shirts and tank tops were the popular style. -
1980's
In the 1980's, the entire fashion industry for active wear began to favor the brighter and even neon colors. Typically no designs were found on active clothing and warm up jackets began to become fashionable. The shorter shorts, however, were still popular amongst both genders. -
1990's
The 90's active wear was characterized by the lengthening of the shorts and the use of more toned down colors. The full warm up suit became popular during this time along with "joggers" or athletic pants. -
2000's
During the early 2000's, the joggers became very popular with matching warm up jackets. Unlike the the 80's and 90's which were characterized by the full warm up suit, the two piece set became the most popular activewear in the 2000's. Another newer trend was the tank top that hadn't been been popular in active wear since the 70's and early 80's. -
2010-Present
Over this 132 year span, athletic wear has changed probably the most since the 1970's. While shorts had begun to lengthen, now they have shortened, though not to the extent of the 1970's. Tops typically include hoodies and tighter t-shirts for men. Overall, active clothing has become much more reliable and comfortable with the use and expansion of the knowledge of dri-fit technology.
