Meghan's Literacy Life

  • Goodnight Moon

    Goodnight Moon
Some my earliest memories are of my mom reading Goodnight Moon to me before I would lay down for bed. Although this was not a tradition, I remember asking her to read me this story very often. From what I remember, my parents did not read much to me. We did many things together, reading was not one of them. I do not think my parents realized how bonding reading together can be and how beneficial and educational it is to start reading to children when they are young.
  • Desire to Read Well

    Desire to Read Well
In school and in church I would listen carefully to people who read well. I very much desired to be like them, so I practiced by reading the books in my house as much as I could. To me, if you read well, then you must be smart, and because I wanted to be smart I wished to be a good reader. I do not recall the books that I read when I was in my early grade school years, but I do know that I practiced to be perfect.

    Became infatuated with certain books

In elementary and middle school I started to find the authors who I loved and series that I could not put down. My favorites were:
    Junie B. Jones
    Amelia Bedelia
    The Babysitters Club
    and Nancy Drew

Moved across the street from a Public Library
Moving to a house that was across the street from a pbulic library really impacted my literacy life. After living there I was able to find a home-away-from-home in a library and feel comfortable reading books. I can vivdly remember the inside of that library. I recall the excitment of seeing the millions of books on the shelves, and the fun I had exploring the sections that I would one day read from. There was no greater thrill than having my own library card and checking out whatever I wished.

Fell in Love With New Series and Authors

Throughout high school I started to read Nicholas Sparks' books and went head over heals for the Twilight Series, as was about every other girl my age. I believe that the love stories in all of the books that these two authors created was what kept me coming back for more.
  • Life Became Busy and I Slowed Down on Reading

Life Became Busy and I Slowed Down on Reading
Near the end of high school leading up to where I am now, life got busy and time started to fly by. Unfortunatly the recommendations of good books and my time to read dissapeared, so I have not read one thing for my own pleasure since high school.
  • Nanny Life

    Nanny Life
I became a nanny for the two most precious one-year-old twins in the world. Having the privilege of being their nanny also provided me the opportunity to create an excitment around reading at such a young age. Lucky for us, the family had quite the collection of books to choose from and we had lots of fun doing it everyday! There was nothign more adorable than seeing one of the twins run up with a book in their hands, plop down in my lap, and hand me the book, as my que to read to them.

    For My Future...

In my future I want to be a teacher who shows my students how to fall in love with reading. I also want to be a mom who reads to my kids in their earliest stages of life for as long as I am able. I want to foster this love for learning through reading and lead all of my kids to the magical worlds that reading can take you them.
