On October 31st, Luther nailed the 95 Theses on a church door, publicly attacking the Catholic Church's corrupt practices through a very strong document, widely known as the 95 Theses. He states his strong dislike towards the selling of indulgences and developed a new system of faith, one that puts the freedom of an individual believer above the traditions of the church.

On June 15 1520, Pope Leo X issued Exsurge Domine in response to Martin Luther’s 95 Theses, which opposed to the teachings of the papacy. The papal bull severely criticized 41 errors in which Luther was demanded to countermand, and also threatened him with excommunication unless he recanted within a sixty-day period. However, on December 10 1520, Luther burnt the papal bull along with the book of church law and other books written by the Roman Church.

On January 3 1521, Luther was excommunicated by the pope due to his refusal to recant and to retract all of his writings against the Roman Church. Thus, resulting in his excommunication by the pope. Meanwhile, Luther’s books were also being burned for allegedly containing heresy. On April 2 1521, Luther began his journey to the Imperial Diet of Worms and was welcomed enthusiastically in all of the towns he passed.

On 16th April 1521, Martin Luther arrived at the Diet of Worms. The Diet of Worms was an imperial council meeting held in the city of Worms, Germany. During the meeting, German Emperor, Charles V, created an edict declaring it illegal to support and help Martin Luther, as Luther's ideas were condemned heretical.

On 4 May, 1521, Luther was kidnapped by Frederick and taken to Wartburg Castle.

The Peasant’s War took place from 1524 to 1525. This uprising was caused due to the changes brought by the Reformation, making peasants fight for their rights and for freedom. However, Luther did not support the peasant’s fighting, instead, he condemned the revolt, causing the peasants to lose the battle due to lack of unity and firm leadership. It is predicted that during this conflict, 100 000 peasants were unfortunately killed.
