    Luther's Trial

    Luther appears at the Diet of Worms in Germany in which his accusers demand that he renounce the books he has written, and he refuses based on a lack of evidence from the Bible that he is wrong. Charles V declares him an outlaw but Frederick III of Saxony, a local ruler, keeps Luther in hiding where he begins to translate the New Testament into German.

    The pope officially and formally excommunicates Luther, throwing him out of the church completely. The pope says that he is an outlaw that should be captured and burned until death (burned alive), going against the German king Charles V who vowed that no German would be convicted without a proper hearing.
