At first were met with little opposition. They pushed in and met heavy retaliation, and worked to isolate Mount Suribachi and take an important quarry on the island. Both goals were accomplished that day.

The 28th Marines secured southern end of Iwo Jima, then aimed for summit of Suribachi. By day's end, 1/3 of the island and Motoyama Airfield No. 1 was under Marine control.

The 28th Marines pushed to the peak of Mount Suribachi and raised the U.S. Flag.

The 3rd Marine Division joins the battle on the fifth day, and aids in the fight for the center portion of the island. The Japanese know that defeat is imminent, but will make the Marines fight for every bit of land.

The first emergency landing on Iwo Jima occurred on March 4th, when a B-29 landed and underwent repairs and refuelling, then continued on it's mission.

By nightfall on March 9th, the 3rd Marine Division has finally managed to push through the center of Iwo Jima and reach the northeastern beach of the island, splitting Japanese defenses in two.

On the left of the 3rd Marine Division, the 5th pushed up the western coast from central airfield to the island's northern tip. Aiming to capture the eastern portion of the island, the 4th Marine Division was met by a "mini banzai" from the last of the Japanese Navy. This attack ended with over 700 dead Japanese and the end of their resistance on the 4th Division. The 4th Division then joined up with the 3rd and 5th.

The Japanese defenses were no longer centralized, and the Marines had succeeded in pushing the defensive sectors into small pockets on the sides of the island.

One final banzai attack was launched on the Marines, and after wiping them out, Iwo Jima was declared a secure island. On April 4th, the 147th Army Infantry relieved the Marines stationed on Iwo Jima.
