Brendan Dassey's attorneys filed a Petition for Executive Clemency with Governor Tony Evers requesting a pardon or commutation of Dassey's sentence. Celebrities, such as Kim Kardashian, have also shown support of Dassey's request for a pardon.

A new eyewitness, Thomas Sowinski, former newspaper delivery driver, came forward in April 2021 with new information in the Halbach murder case. Sowinski advised that he saw Bobby Dassey and another man suspiciously moving a blue RAV4 on the Avery property on Nov. 5, 2005. Before Sowinski drove away that morning, Bobby Dassey attempted to stop him from leaving.

The Wisconsin Court of Appeals rejected Steven Avery's appeal for a new trial. The Court believed that even with the new evidence gathered, it does not support the need for a new trial in the matter.

In another attempt to shorten Brendan Dassey's sentence, there was a public letter addressed and published to Governor Evers requesting that he consider the Petition for Clemency, or at least read the letters handwritten by Dassey himself. The public letter received many signatures from people all around the world showing their support for Dassey.

With the Wisconsin Supreme Court only accepting 1-2% of petitions for review, Steven Avery's team was not too surprised when they learned that their petition was denied. The Court did not provide reasoning as to why they denied Avery's petition, but his counsel says that they will continue to fight to prove Steven Avery's innocence.

Steven Avery recently wrote an 8 page letter to Wisconsin lawmakers requesting that they address several issues that exist within the criminal justice system. He makes personal references to the trial judges on his case and his trial attorneys and how their poor performance caused him to be a victim of an unjust system. He pleads for it to be corrected.
