    Japan and America fought in the battle of the coral sea to try to stop Japanese advancements. In the end it was a draw but it stopped Japan from invading Australia.

    The Japanese wanted to destroy the U.S. pacific fleet by luring them to midway island. At the beginning of the battle it looked like the U.S. would lose but suddenly they sunk 4 Japanese carriers. By the end of the battle the U.S. won and destroyed about 250 Japanese planes.

    In December Germany launched a counterattack in Belgium and Luxembourg. There were many casualties and it was considered the biggest WWII battle. In the end the Allies won and the nazi’s knew they had lost the war.

    U.S. planes needed to refuel between the U.S. and Japan and the island Iwo Jima was in the perfect location. In February U.S. soldiers landed on the beach and fought in bad conditions like sinking up to their ankles in the soft ash. It took 100,000 U.S. a month to beat 25,000 Japanese soldiers.

    To get Japan to surrender the U.S. wanted to invade japan. To do that the U.S. needed and island even closer to Japan. The Japanese used the mountains to fight in and they flew about 2,000 kamikaze attacks on U.S. warships. The U.S. won but suffered from 50,000 casualties.
