The MLL was founded in 1999 by Jake Steinfeld, Dave Morrow and Tim Robertson.

Major League Lacrosse was divided into the American division and the National division from 2001-2005.

Regular season play begins in June of 2001 with six teams playing 14 games.

In the first two seasons MLL teams played 14 games. In 2003, that number was cut to a 12-game regular season.

New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc. comes together with Major League Lacrosse as a Founding Member, as well as an Anchor League Level Sponsor.

The shot clock was changed from 45 seconds to 60 seconds.

In 2007 the MLL and ESPN agreed to a television contract which will last until the 2016 season.

At the end of the 2008 season, four teams (Los Angeles, New Jersery, Philadelphia, San Fransisco) folded due to financial problems. This forced the MLL to form one conference.

MLL conformed to high school and college lacrosse rules and began allowing 4 long-stick defensemen instead of 3.

MLL announced a major television agreement with CBS Sports Network which brought 14 live games in HD to CBS along with all 18 episodes of "Inside the MLL” as well.
