  • Cotton Gin

    Cotton Gin
    Cotton was starting to become a popular export. However, there were still problems with hand picking cotton seeds from cotton fiber. The Cotton Gin was created by Eli Whitney to speed up the process of removing cotton seeds from the cotton fiber. Although very popular, Eli didn't get as much money as everyone thought.

  • Louisiana Purchase

    Louisiana Purchase
    The Louisiana Purchase was the United States buying 530,000,000 acres of land from France. President Thomas Jefferson saw thatt it was necessary to have the ports of New Orleans. Because France needed the money to fight a war against Britain, France and the U.S. compromised for $10,000,000 and not only did the U.S. get New Orleans, they also got all of Louisiana's territory for only $15,000,000 (only five million extra). The U.S. got 828,000 sq miles in land.

  • American System

    American System
    At the time, the American System was created with the purpose to strenghten and unify the nation. In it were three parts which included: a tariff, that would tax imported goods, U.S. government would fund internal improvements, & reestablishing of the bank of the U.S.

  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The events of the pro/anti-slavery events tie into this. The balance of free and slave states were at a high tension.
    Missouri soon got its request to becoming a slave state while making Maine a free state. The only problem that would hold is that there was a perfect balance between free and slave states. If Missouri were to get its chance to being a slave state, it would upset the balance.

  • Monroe Doctrine

    Monroe Doctrine
    The Monroe Doctrine was a document where it prohibited Europen Territories to try to take any of their land. Basically it was a "you stay of your turf, we'll stay on ours" type of agreement. It helped us because it prevented European territories from taking land from the U.S.

  • Nat Turner's Rebellion

    Nat Turner's Rebellion
    Nat Turner was a slave that decided to rebel against "the whites" after seeing what he thought was a message from God. He dicided to kill many slave owners & families alike. The strange thing was that Nat's owner wasn't a bad person, yet he was killed as will.

  • Nullification Process

    Nullification Process
    At the time before the nullification process, Congress made tariffs that were only benefitting the North, than the South. For example, the cloth producers benefitted from this, but the raw cotton from the south received less and less buyers.
    When the nullification process was set, it stated that: "if a law of seemed unfair/ not right to the state's belief, it would have the rights to nullify it between their borders.

  • Texas Revolution

    Texas Revolution
    The Texas Revolution was where American Colonists decided to secure their independence from mexico. However, Mexico's "dictator" refused this and decided to do things like:
    abolish slavery and place many customs, that apparently the settlers didn't appreciate too well, and rebelled. It wasn't until 1845 where Texas became a part of the U.S.

  • Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo

    Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo
    The treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo was signed on February 2, 1848. The main reason for this treaty was to settle peace truces between the Mexican-American war. With this, the U.S. gained about 525,000 sq miles of territory including:
    Arizona, Californa, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming.

    Compromise of 1850
    The compromise of 1850 were consisting of five laws that were to end the problems with slavery. Here, California became a free state, which upset the balance of the free/slave state balance.

    The Kansas-Nebraska act was made in order to organize Western Territories. However, how it was set up to be, made North & South relations worsen.

  • Beating of Charles Sumner

    Beating of Charles Sumner
    Charles Sumner was giving a two day speech that seemed to anger two individuals: Andrew Butler & Preston Brooks. After giving his speech, an infuriated Preston Brooks decided to teach Charles a lesson by hitting him with a cane repeatedly. Northeners were furious and tried to get him removed, but failed. Southerners cheered, praised him, sent him spare canes, and numerous tried to get him back into office (which infuriated Northeners the most.)

  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    The Dred Scott decision was a court case. Here, Dred Scott sued for his freedom. Here. Dred has been living in a free state, thanks to the Missouri Compromise. However, court rules still "denied" his freedom. Soon after, people started questioning whether the system was still fair to be in use.

  • Harper's Ferry

    Harper's Ferry
    A main event that happened at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, was about a man names: John Brown. This man hated slavery and he would stop at nothing to end it. He believes he is sent by God to end the conflict. Even his sons stopped at nothing to end it. The men quickly took all of the Southern arsenals. But soon were captured.   • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    The Election of 1860 was a huge event because it would depend on who would not only become the next president, but also would give the president a choice about slavery in the world. Southeners wanted a president who'd keep slavery while Northeners wanted freedom and yet so much turmoil went on that everyone was concerned for this issue.

  • South Secedes

    South Secedes
    The South Secedes was an event that happened not too long after Lincoln's election. Here, states from the South began to secede from the Union. The topic of free/slave states still applied here. The next president would decide the fate of whether there would be slaves or slaves would no longer had to be treated unfairly.
