Major Events Leading to the Civil War

  • Cottin Gin

    The cotton gin which was invented by Eli Whitney, and patened by Whitney on March 14, 1794. Cotton was in high demand, and the main source fo income for the the south, A reason for high demand was the north was growing in textile industries. The Gin made more of a profit for cotton growers. Slaves were used to do the maual labor becasue they were considered ceaper.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    In 1803, April 30th, the louisisana purchase doubled the size of the U.S. In need of funds, Napolean sought to sell land and the U.S. had a chance to expand its territory. Jefferson had qaulms about buying the land scince it wasn't in his jurisdiction to do so. "Two months later"(pg.229) The U.S. grew. The major issue here woudl be whether the new territory was free or slave.
  • American System

    The American System in the year 1815. The system was meant to charter national banks, tax on imported goods, national system of roads and canals. The American System resulted in many problems but slavery was a huge factor.
  • Missouri Compromise

    The missouri Compromise of 1820. Slavery was given a boundry. You have those for adn against slavery. Missouri rose up and wanted to become a state, a slave state. Slavery was the trigger for the Civil War.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    The Monroe Doctrine was "presented ot congress" as a statement that the U.S. would keep their hands off European countries in the New World.
  • Nat Turners Rebellion

    Nat Turner's Rebellion of 1831, a mann who was a preacher but also a slave. Killing hsi masters, not only did he kill his, but went on a killing spree the lives of many white men were taken. Turner was executed along with fifty five other innocent slaves for their rule. Once again slavery but slaughter triggered the war.
  • Nullification Crisis

    July 14, 1832 rising tensions between teh north and the south. Tarrifs were created and refused. This was the first movment in which the Civil War recieved opposition. Two opposing views, no compromise, was the trigger.
  • Texas Revolution

    Texas Revolution, Mexicans vs American-Texans. The Texans one a vitory over the Mexicans expanding their trritory to the Rio Grande. Creating Republic of Texas, Independant. Belligerance adn opposing views, prompted the trigger for the Civil War.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    General Scott overcame Mexico City and brought the end of the mexican Resistance. The Mexicans then ceded California. This Treaty brought about immese debates and ultimately pointed to the Civil War.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Five seperate bills, housing three seperate compromises. The balancing of power between the slave states and the free states. Popular sovreignty decided on whether states woudl belong to another, or be a free or slave state. The major trigger here was states rights.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was not meant to be a heart wrenching, string pulling story but a call to action. Harriet Beecher Stowe, wrote the book in the hopes of a change but once again like the Dred Scott case it fed the fire to its peak. The book heavily laden with ani-slavery brought the peak of the conflict before it all went down hill.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    The Kansas -Nebraska Act oppened up for popular sovereignty after Stephen Douglas. The Act brought about the saying "Bleeding Kansas". Considered to be the most significant event, leading to the Civil War. Once again it was anit-slavery vs. pro-slavery.
  • Beating of Charles Sumner

    Charles Sumner a leading abolitioner against slavery was beaten for a harsh accusation against Senator Brooks Uncle, Senator Butler. Due to the circumstnaces of the north and south, both sides thoought their actions justifiable. Senator Beooks defending his Uncle's honor, Senator Sumner defeending his belief was permanently injured. Beat over the head with Senator Brooks cane, snapped in two. Charles sumner denounced slavery publicly and openly, leaving him vulnerable and not a very popular Sena
  • Dred Scott Decision

    The Dred Scott Case was a black man, who went before a court to sue missouri. He was sueing missouri because his wife and daughter were bron in a free state. The Court over ruled him saying he was not a citizen there fore he had no rights before a federal court. Scott menat to end it all but only fed the fire.
  • Harpers Ferry

    John Browns raid, a group of white and black men forging the road together to raid the Federal arsenal in Virginia. Brown had doubts about actually beign abl to pull off the raid, and in the end was right. He had an in plan but no escape plan. The trigger in this case would be the attack on a federal arsenal. Attacking an arsenal is a challenge.
  • Election of 1860

    The Election of 1860 was Abraham Linclon the man who campaigned to change the real issue and Stephan Douglas who was relying on Popular sovreignty. Lincoln won, because Lincoln was against slavery southern extremisim became more evident and the southerners began to fear for their cause.
  • South Carolina Secedes

    South Carolina along with Missouri and Alabama threaten secesion if Linclon took office. The threat was Kept and South Carolina left the Unon on a unanimous vote. Union, Sesecion, and war.
