Major Events in Language Learning

  • Prenatal development to 1 year

    The child starts cooing, making vowel sounds. They learn to observe what their elders are doing. They are able to babble and eventually add basic words to their vocabulary and can communicate physically, verbally and emotionally.
  • 1 year to 2 years

    1 year to 2 years
    The toddler finally says his/her first word. They can start combining words and communicating more fluently with everyone around them.
  • Age 2 to 5 (Preschool)

    Children start developing longer sentences and understanding "who", "what", "where", "why", etc. They start to murmur and stutter a lot, but that because they are usually trying to say something. In their mind they know what to say but they still have trouble saying everything in words.
  • Ages 5-7

    Ages 5-7
    The child is enrolled in school, now learning how to apply everything they have learned at their home and also adding some new stuff to the plate. Kids this age tend to start learning their numbers, how to tell time, and most of all read. At least for the most part.
  • Ages 8-9

    Ages 8-9
    Children now know how to tell the days, weeks, months. They have a higher capacity of language and speech and can read more complex books and actually understand them. They start developing closer relationships in school.
  • Ages 10-12

    Ages 10-12
    Finally, children are in middle school, they love to read, talk and socialize. They tend to write more and express themselves more. They can communicate with ease with adults and form complex sentences. This is the stage of early adolescence.
