Magna Carta
Issues on June 15, 1215. The Magna Carta was the first document found onto a King of England by a group of his subjects, the feudal barons, in an attempt to limit his powers by law and protect their privileges.The charter was an important part of the extensive historical process that led to the rule of constitutional law in the English speaking world. -
Jamestown Settled
It was the first successful colony town established in America. It was named after King James the first of England. -
Mayflower Compact
The Mayflower compact was signed on November 11, 1620. It was the first governing document of Plymouth Coloney. It was written by the seperatists, fleeong from religioous persecution by King James of Great Britain. -
Petition of Right
Passed on June 7, 1628. It was a major English constitututional document that sets out specific liberties of the subject that the king is prohibited from infringing. -
English Bill of Rights
The English Bill of Rights was passed on December 16, 1689. It was a restatement in statutory form of the Declaration of Right presented by the Convention Parliament to William and Mary in March 1689 inviting them to become joint sovereigns of England, lays down limits on the powers of the crown and sets out the rights and rules of freedom of speech. -
Albany Plan Union
Was a proposal to create a unified government for the 13 colonies. it was suggested by Ben Franklin. More than 20 represenatives of several nothern and mid- atlantic colonies had gathered to plan theior defense related to the French and Indian War. -
Stamp Act
Imposewd a direct tax by the British Parliament, specifically on the colonies of British America, and it required that many printed materials in the colonies be produced on stamped paper produced in London. -
Boston Massacre
Incident in which British Army soldiers killed 5 civilian men and injured 6 others. This event was also known as the Incident on King Street. -
Boston Tea Party
It was a political protest by the Sons of Liberty in Boston, against the tax policy of the british government and the East India Company. They entered the Boston Harbor in the middle of the night and dumped all of the crates of tea aboard the ships into the water. -
Intolerable Acts
Series of punitive laws passed by the British Parliament. The act stripped Massachusetts of self government and historic rights, triggering outrage and resistance in the 13 colonies. -
First Continental Congress
It was a convention of delegates from 12 colonies (Georgia was not present) It was at Carpenters Hall in Philadelphia. It was called in response to the passage of the Intolerable Acts. -
Amewrican Revolution Begins
It was a political Upheaval during the last half of the 18th century in which the 13 colonies in North American Joined together to break from the British Empire, Combining to become the United States of America. -
Second Continental Congress
Was a convention of delegates from the 13 colonies. The 2nd congress managed the colonial war effort and moved incrementally towards independence. -
Declaration of Independence
Announced that the 13 American colonies regarded themselves as independent states, and no longer apart of the British Empire. Instead they formed a union that would become a new nation- The UNited States of America. -
Constution Convention
It started the discussion about the formation of America's government under the constitution. -
Articles of Confederation
Was an agreement among the 13 founding states that established United States of America as a confederation of sovereign states and served as its first constitution. -
Shay's Rebellion
Named after Daniel Shay. Caused by several factors: Finacial difficulties, brought about by a post war economic depression, a credit squeeze caused by a lack of currency. -
Connecticut Compromise
Was an agreement that large and small states reached during the Constitutional Convention of 1787 that in port defined the legislative structure and representation that each state would have under the U.S. Constitution. -
Philadelphia Convention
Adressed problems in governing the United States, which had been operating under the Articles of Confederation. Although the concention was intended to revise the Articles, it was also for creating a new government than trying to fix the existing one.
