Major Events for Early American Government

    Magna Carta

    Magna Carta
    This was signed by King John, under the force of the archbishop and the nobles. It was the first document that tried to limit power of the king. It was made to ensure that King John would not steal money or land from his people.
  • Jamestown settled

    Jamestown settled
    Jamestown was the first successful English settlement on North America, which was named after King James of Enland. It was founded on the colony of Virginia
  • Mayflower Compact

    Mayflower Compact
    The Mayfower was the first document of Plymoth Colony. It was signed by the 41 men on the Mayflower, during the early settlements in North America. It established a temporary goverment that eventually became the basis of government in Virginia.
  • Petition of Right

    Petition of Right
    This document states new principles of the English Constitution. It established basic rights such as no new taxes without consent of parliment or no freeman should be imprisioned exept only by law.
  • English Bill of Rights

    English Bill of Rights
    The English Bill of Rights was the basic document of the English constitution. It gave male citizens certain rights and liberties that could not be taken away.
  • Albany Plan of Union

    Albany Plan of Union
    The Albany Plan of Union was written by Ben Franklin in 1754. The Albany Plan of Union declared that the 13 colonies work together as one to win the French and Indian War.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The Stamp Tax was emplimented by Britsh Parliment in 1765. The tax mostly targeted the new found Brishish America. The money would go to support troops in the new world. The English thought the colonist should pay the most because they were the ones that benifited it. The colonist would soon rebel the new tax.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    The Boston Massarce was tragic event where British soldiers shot and killed five men and hurt six. This event sparked rebellions in neighboring towns and colonies and would be the beginnings of the Revolutionary War.
  • Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party was a protest on the tas on printed goods that was implemented by Britain and the East India Company. The Sons of Liberty gathers a Protest group and dumped crates of tea into the harbor durning the night.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intoerable Acts were many acts that Britain put on teh Colonists in response to the Boston Tea Party. Acts like The Boston Port Act, the Qurting Act and the Massachusetts Bay Regualting Act. The colonists were furious about the new acts. Their anger was important to the start of their fight for independence.

    The Revolution started out with protests from angry colonist and escalated in to a full war. The war was for colonist to get independence from Britain. The War lasted eight years.
  • Second Continental Congress

    The Second Continental Congress was convention of representitives from all thirteen colonies in Philadelphia. During the convention, the men managed war efforts and helped to eventually move the country toward independence.
  • Declaration of Independence

    The Declaration of Independence was the document that declared US indepenence from Britain. The Continental Congress appointed five men to write the document. They became known as the Committee of Five. Thomas Jeffersen wrote the first draft. It explained all the bad things the King had done to the colonies and that the coloniests had rights that were being threatened.

    The Articles of Confederation was the frist document written by British colonists that stated America was a confederation of soviergn states. But the document was later replaced by the Constitution.
  • Shay's Rebellion

    Shay's Rebellion
    Shay's Rebellion was a revolt by New England farmers who demanded to be paid for their services in the Rvolutionary War. Four men were killed and twenty wounded. Many other men were arrested.
  • Connecticut Compromise

    The Connectcut Compromise is an agreement that all the colonies made at the Constitutional Convention. It shaped the legislative sytem and gave each state representation in the constitution.

    The Philadelphia Convention was a meeting to discuss the issies with the Articles of Confederation. Representitives from all over the colonies came to debate a new form of government. They came up with the Constitution.

    Constitution Convention was the covention of 55 delegates that lasted four months. The men were joined to wrtie and organize the Constitution for a federal republic.
