  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    All border states went with the Union and Union won the Antietam war, so Lincoln decided it was time for the Emancipation Proclamation. It freed the slaves in states that were rebelling against the North, not all slaves. It didn’t free them immediately, it called for gradual emancipation. This Proclamation changed the war aim from keeping the Union together to ending slavery.
  • Gettysburg Adress

    Gettysburg Adress
    Gettysburg Address was a ceremony to decimate a cemetery. Lincoln gave a 2 minute speak at the ceremony. He states that all men are created equal, but now we are engaged in a Civil War. He summed up everything North was fighting for, such as liberty, equality, and freedom for everyone. Lincoln’s message was that the living can honor the dead, not with a speech or cemetery, but by continuing to fight for their ideas and what they lost their lives for.
  • 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments

    13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments
    13th-abolished slavery in the US and stated that “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime”. shall exist in the US.

    14th-granted citizenship and civil and legal rights to African-Americans and slaves who have been emancipated after the American Civil War. All persons “born or naturalized in the US” are provided “equal protection under the laws”.

    15th-States that the rights of citizens of the US to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the US.
  • Lincoln’s Assassination

    Lincoln’s Assassination
    Lincoln went to Ford’s Theatre to watch “Our American Cousin”. A pro-southern actor, John Wilkes Booth, pretends to be in the play to get past the guards. He then walks into Lincoln’s booth and shoots him in the head. John jumps over he balcony and makes an escape, where he was later tracked to a farmhouse. He surrendered, but was shot dead. At first, South was happy about Lincoln’s death but then realized their treatment would have been better with Lincoln. Andrew Jackson then becomes president
  • Black Codes

    Black Codes
    Black codes are laws designed to regulate the affairs in the emancipated blacks and keep them as slaves. These codes restored pre-emancipation race-relation. Penalties imposed on blacks who “jumped” their labor contracts which made them work 1 year minimal pay. They also weren’t allowed to be on jury and couldn’t vote.
  • Reconstruction Act

    The Reconstruction Act divided the South into 5 military districts, each commanded by a general. It required that states wishing to be administered had to pass the 14th amendment.
