The origional station was built in the beggining of 1857 but it was opened in november 1859.The Central Station was a combined terminal and through station: it included four terminal tracks for the RhE running to the west, while the CME had two through tracks connected to its line on the eastern side of the Rhine by the Cathedral Bridge.

Serious planning for an enlarged station was therefore only taken after the nationalisation of the railways in the 1880s.

Near the cologne main station the Hohenzollern bridge which is an importnat route for the railway station was partially damged by airstrikes in world war 2.

After the war, reconstruction was quickly organized; by 8 May 1948, the Hohenzollern Bridge was accessible by pedestrians again. Over the next eleven years the bridge was improved until by 1959 it was usable without any impairment

The development of the new building was conntinue from last many decades but one can see now this complete building.

In 2000, a shopping centre was opened at the entry level—including the area under the S-Bahn tracks. The so-called colonnade includes 70 shops and restaurants with over 11,500 square metres of retail space and 700 employees.
