    At 4-45am on September 1, 62 German divisions supported by 1,300 aircraft commenced the invasion of Poland. When Hitler invaded Poland, he was sure that Britain and France would continue their policy of appeasement, but he was wrong. This event led Europe to stumble into war.

    Germany's hope of defending Britain lay in winning the battle of Atlantic. From the start of the war till the end, the of atlsntic never stopped. There has been 3 years in which many ships sunk. The Battle of the Atlantic was one of the longest campaigns of World War Two, and it was proportionally among the most costly. Between 75,000 and 85,000 Allied seamen were killed.

    Began September 3, 1939, with the sinking of the Montréal-bound passenger ship SS Athenia by a German submarine west of Ireland. Of the 1,400 passengers and crew, 118, including 4 Canadians, were killed.

    Dunkirk

    On the 9/10 May Germany started attacking low countries. British Expeditionary Force were unable to prevent their fall. Germans captured the coast and cutted off BEF and Large numbers of Allied troops. The BEF, still had a perimeter around the port of Dunkirk. They created an operation Dynamo which was to evacuate the soldiers by fleet of destoyers and merchant ships. They rescued 7,699 men on the first day and 17,804 on the second. In total 332,226 men were rescued from the Dunkirk.

    Battle of Britain

    When Germany captured France, they had one more enemy-Great Britain. Germany wanted to start fighting with planes, but finish with ground soldiers. In July 1940 they began to attack Great Britain. Germans bombed airfields and general strategic targets. Britain defended well. They fought in the air. Ont he Octomber it was clear that Britain has won. This was the first time in WW2 when Germany was defeated.

    It is a name given to Nazi's Germany invasion of Russia. 4.5 million troops launched a surprise attack deployed from German-controlled Poland, Finland, and Romania. Soviets were unprepared for the sudden blitzkreig attacks across a border that spanned nearly 2,900 km,and they suffered horrible losses. It was all going well for Germany, but when Russian winter came, German advances came to a halt.Hitler's plan to conquer the Soviet Union before winter had failed, at great cost, and that failure.

    On the morning of December 7, 1941 Japanese planes attacked American warships at Pearl Harbour in Hawaii. It came as a complete surprise to the Americans . Within hours bombs and torpedoes sank six American ships and killed more than 2,000 Americans. The Japanese had destroyed the heart of the American fleet.

    It was a major turning point of WW2. They dealyed by 1 day because of the wether conditions. On June 6, 1944 ,156,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of France’s Normandy region. There were 5,000 ships ,50,000 vehicles and 11,000 planes. They fought for 5 days.
