    Lincoln wins a close four-way race for presidency which upsets the South because they don’t think Lincoln will represent them. Him winning was what made some southern states really unhappy and caused them to Secede.

    South Carolina first to Secede
    After the election because Lincoln won South Carolina secede from the Union. They were the first state to do so. Once they seceded more states starting seceding separating the North and the south. This completely separated them into two groups the Union and the Confederacy.

    Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated as the 16th president of the United States. In his Inaugural Address he gives a warning to the South; he will not tolerate secession. It is also important because he is not only talking as the new president, but also as the new leader in a nation crisis.

    On March 11, 1861, delegates formed Confederate States of America agreed on their own constitution. This constitution was signed in Alabama. This helped control the lives of 9 million people including 3 million slaves.

    Lincoln issues the Emanc Proclamation. It frees all slaves in territory captured by the Union Army, and orders enlistment of Black soldiers. From this point forward, the civil war is war over slavery.

    Many plans to restore the country after the war. 10% plan and Radical Republican’s plan 10%- if 10% of the southern states agreed to coming back, they would be restored in the Union. Radical- wanted to punish the south and not let them in as easily, required 50% of states to agree.

    This was caused from the 13th amendment. This required slaves to sign a contract and have very little pay. If you didn’t want to be a slave anymore, you would have to go to jail.
