Beginning in summer, monarch butterflies will start to lay their eggs in milkweed plants.
-
Soon after the eggs are laid, they hatch and become caterpillars. They eat the milkweed plant to grow until they are ready for the next stage
-
Approximately 2 weeks later, the caterpillar will complete a process called J-hooking and become a chrysalis, which is similar to a cocoon
-
After the caterpillar forms a chrysalis, 10 days later, a monarch butterfly should hatch. The chrysalis will turn from a bright green colour to a more brown colour. From here, the butterfly will go on to live its life, including moving to Mexico when winter comes.
