    Ancient Greek Democracy

    Took place in 507 BC. Was the first known Democracy where the citizens took an active role in government. This was developed for upper and lower class citizens, this excluded slaves and women because women were not counted as citizens. The Democracy helped build stronger societies.

    Magna Carta

    Magna Carta is an English charter and the first document forced upon the king. The charter read that no "freeman" (in the sense of non-serf) could be punished except through the law of the land. this law is actually still in existance today.The law was forced on the king to limit his power and alow normal people to have there own privleges protected. This was the first step in controlling the monarchs power and having a more of, democracy styled government.

    Renaissance

    Renaissance took place in the 14thC-17thC. This was a point in time where logic and reason started getting power over the church, and heavily weakening its power. In this time period individualism was steadily able to grow and there was a growing middle class as well. This prompted to be the age of enlightenment.

    Haudenosaunee Confederacy

    15thC-1776. The Great Law Of Peace or Constitution of Haudenosaunee Confederacy was introduced, which is the path to harmony and unity among nations, equal participation of people in government which included women. There was freedom of speech and individual rights for all citizens, this impacted with society by making it a more equal and fair society for all citizens.

    Reformation

    Took place from 1517-1648. It altered political and economic ways in Europe due to opposition of the Catholic Church. Along with the Renaissance this also prompted a rise of enlightenment. With the opposition of the church, the church lost much of its power.
  • The Enlightenment

    Happened in the 18thC. The Enlightenment was often called the age of reason, because of the belief in the worth of an individual, natural and inalienable rights were recognized and democratic values were present. The beliefs of Classical Liberalism were put into place. The people believed that logic and reason would lead to a tolerant and free society. This changed how the world sees its governing views and official ideas of a democracy were put into place.
  • Industrial Revolution

    The Industrial Revolution took place from roughly 1750-1850. The Revolution started in England due to the value of individual involvement and minimal government involvement, and thus caused a wave of capitalism to spread around the world. With the Revolution people were free to pursue individual wealth, progress, and innovation could flourish. The Revolution allowed a change to class structure allowing people to have more freedom, giving society better quality individual rights.
  • American Revolution

    John Locke declared independance from British crown, American citizens wanted to rule themselves and not be ruled by an out of state monarch. Locke introduced the idea of equality for all citizens. When they achieved independence and the declaration was written a republican style government was formed.
  • French Revolution

    1789-1799. Government was in debt despite taxation, reason was wars including funding of the American Revolution. One leader of the revolution was Maximilien Robespierre, revolution lead to terror, death and lost life. Because nobility had higher rights, common people fought and in 1789 the declaration of the rights of man and of the citizen was signed. Declaration was for Individual freedoms, men are born equal, Liberty-injury to noone, freedom of speech. This contributed to France’s society.
  • Changes To Class System

    Happened in the 19thC. The Industrial Revolution had a great impact and the economic change lead to a large social change. This is a time where peasants moved away from farms and moved into cities, where they could receive more economic gain. With more people came more money, and more goods, they got tired of being ruled by a monarch so with the growing middle class they demanded a change.
