Lewis & Clark begin the expedition
President Thomas Jefferson created the Discovery Corps to explore and claim territory for the U.S. He assigned U.S. Army Captain Merriweather Lewis to led the expedition to explore western United States. -
Met their first Indian
The exchange of gifts with the Oto and Missouri Indian Tribe went peacefully. -
Encounter with the hostile Teton Sioux
The Teton Sioux greeted Lewis and Clark with hostility. They wanted a gift of a boat to allow the expedition to pass safely. -
Expedition met their first grizzly bear
Lewis did not believe the Indians about how powerful the grizzlies can be. He thought that since the Indians were using bow and arrows and the expedition had guns the grizzlies wouldn't be a threat. -
Lewis and Clark got their first view of the Rocky Mountains.
Lewis and Clark wanted to see the dangerous mountain they would have to pass and they got their wish on the last week of May. -
