Lewis and Clark Journey

  • Plain Horned Toad

    Lewis sent a specimen to Jefferson from St. Louis, Missouri. They were found from Kansas to Texas and west to southeastern Arizona. There was also an isolated population in Louisiana.
  • Plain Grey Wolf

    It was first noted near present day Leavenworth, Kansas
  • Missouri Indians discovered

    Lewis and Clark first came across the Missouri settlements in the summer of 1804. After meeting and talking they came to an agreement and decided to have a trade. The chief and the missouri indians were disappointed by the gifts and it ended on neutrally and peaceful.
  • Curlycup Gumweed

    Found in Dokata Country, Nebraska. The Indians used its flowers and leaves as medicine and used in healing.
  • Oto Indians

    They lived along the Platte River. Lewis and Clark met the chief, Big Horse. They discusses trade and peace negotiations. In the end the Indians were not happy about the exchange. They later went on met President Jefferson in 1805
  • Rocky Mountain Bee Plant

    These flower are found at the bottom of low mountains. They produce a great amount of nectar that attract bees, giving them their name. The native americans would boil their leaves and use them for food and as medicine for a stomach ache. When there was droughts early Spanish-Americans would eat the seeds on tortillas although they barely had a satisfactory taste.
  • Pawnee Indians

    The Pawnee Indians were located in “Indian Territory” which is now Oklahoma. The would use tepees when on hunting campaigns but were permanently settled in dome shaped lodges.
  • Teton Sioux Indians

    These native americans were located nearby the missouri river. They were described as ‘war-like’ and were hostile toward Lewis, Clarke, and their crew, attacking them and demanding tobacco from the expeditioners. They fought back, eventually just giving them tobacco in order to halt the fighting. Later when returning to the missouri river CLarke still held a grudge against these indians, forbidding any contact with them.
  • Arikara Indians

    These native americans were very agricultural and peaceful towards Lewis and Clark. They gave the natives gifts but they were most interested in Clark’s slave, York. They had never seen an african american before.
  • Mandan Indians

    The Corps encountered the Mandan Indians after passing many abandoned villages that were wiped out from smallpox.
  • Hidatsa Indians

    Hidatsa, meaning “willow” to the native americans. The Hidatsa tribes were friendly with Lewis and Clark and the two groups would often exchange information, educating each other about the seemingly different worlds they are from.
  • Fort was finished

    At the end of November, the fort they planned to spend the winter in was completed in being built.
  • Northern Flicker

    Discovered in April of 1805, this bird is brown with black spots and a red patch on their nape. Foudn in open country with trees, large gardens, or parks.
  • Fork in the river

    They came upon a fork in the river they were following. Lewis and Clark believed the the southern branch was the right way. The other men thought the northern branch was the Missouri river.
  • Great Falls of the Missouri River

    Lewis became the first white man to look at the Great Falls of the Missouri River. Instead of one big fall, there were 5 seperate water falls.
  • Shoshone Horses

    Lewis and Clark needed horses for the next part of thier journey. They met the Shoshone Indians and bargined with them for horses. The leader of the tribe was Sacagawea’s brother.
  • Breaking camp

    They left the camp they set up and started following the Clearwater River. For the first time on the expiedition, there was a river's current at the explorer's backs.
  • Sacagawea Joins the Expedition

    Sacagawea joined the expedition in the winter of 1805 while pregnant, after her husband was hired by Lewis.
  • False Alarm

    They believed that they had finally reached the Pacific Ocean, but it turned out to just be the Columbia.
  • Finally

    They finally reached the Pacific Ocean in the middle of November. They then proceded to spend the winter on the coast.
