In 1800 there were believes that there was a north passage. Thomas Jefferson the third president and the president of that time also believed the rumor. So he sent some old friends to go on the expedition. At that time the french sold some land to get some money because they were running low on supplies. So the french sold the land for 15,000,000 dollars. Then the united states bought the land. they bought the land to make sure that the north passage was owned by the french.
  • The planning of the journey of the north passage

In 1803 Lewis and Clark had to plan their trip. There was rumors that wooly mammoths still roamed the land. The indians were still hostile and dangerous at that time. Therefore the trip would be rather dangerous. Clark did not know how to find their way back without a map. Good thing that Lewis had some mapmaking skills. Lewis also got some camping supplies in order to survive on their journey to the north passage.
