At the age of about fourteen Leonardo was apprenticed by his father to the artist Andrea del Verrocchio. Leonardo was eventually to become a paid employee of Verrocchio's studio. During his time there, Leonardo met many of the most important artists to work in Florence in the late fifteenth century including Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Pietro Perugino

Leonardo never attended public school. He was raised by his single father. When Leonardo was fifteen he joined the studio af Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence. Leonardo left Florence and travelled to Milan carrying a gift from Lorenzo to the regent ruler, Ludovico Sforza. He was employed by Ludovico. during which time he worked on the Last Supper.

In Florence, Leonardo lived at premises of the Servite Community, and at that time drew the large cartoon for the Madonna and Child and St Anne which attracted a lot of popular attention. He is also reported to have had a job to do for King Louis XII of France.

Leonardo returned to Florence where he rejoined the Guild of Saint Luke on 18 October 1503, and spent two years designing and painting a mural of The Battle of Anghiari. The Battle of Anghiari is a lost painting by Leonardo da Vinci, at times referred to as "The Lost Leonardo" which some commentators believe to be still hidden beneath one of the later frescoes in the Hall of the Five Hundred in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence.

Many of Leonardo's pupils were to copy St. John the Baptist and their work appears in various collections. Other paintings mentioned in this article which are on a similar theme and presently thought to be the work of Leonardo may later prove to be those of other artists. Typical of Leonardo's paintings, these will be heavily debated especially as so many copies of his original were done by students.
