The draft of world war 2 called for men of ages from 18 to 45 required to serve in the military if they were able bodied, and if they were required for the war effort. This raises the military to roughly 16 million soldiers very quickly. This generally marks the beginning of the military involvement in the war.

The P-51 Mustang was new plane put into service. It had much greater operation range allowing the fighters to accompany bombers the whole trip instead just half of the trip (the easy half at that) and had much better weapons. Bombers were much less likely to be shot down by fighters which meant more bombs were dropped, less runs had to be made on each target, and it helped speed up the war.

American forces capture Iwo Jima which becomes a major staging area for the invasion of other islands like Okinawa and eventually Japan. This marks the beginning of a successful campaign to end Japan's involvement in the war.
