In 1207 the Lord Mayor Maurice De Gant turned Leeds into a small market town. At that time trade and commerce were increasing in England and many new towns were founded.

1552 brought a Grammar School to Leeds and in 1626 it was incorporated. William Sheafield was the founder and it was to provide feepaying education for the children in the city of Leeds

Then in 1642 came civil war between king and parliament. Most of the townspeople supported the king and a royalist army occupied Leeds. But in Janurary 1643 parliamentary soldiers captured it.

The year 1645 was one of severe plague in several towns at the same time one of the towns affected was Leeds.

In 1694 Leeds gained a piped water supply. People who could afford to have the water supply in their homes did.

Leeds grew rapidly with many more houses been built and all of a sudden the streets got more dirty.As a result there was a cholera epidemic in Leeds and killed more than 2,000 people in 1849.

In 1891 Leeds gained an electricity supply and once again those who could afford to have it in their homes did. It also lit up the streets at night.

In 1904 Leeds University was founded. It was oringinally called the Yorkshire Collage of Science but the called it Leeds University.

During the Second World War 77 people in Leeds were killed by bombs and 197 buildings were destroyed this could include people homes,schools and work offices.

Millenium Square opened in 2000 in the middle of Leeds. Many people visit there today and the population of Leeds now is 787,000
