"How the Other half Lives" written
In the mists of New York there are many poor families.
these poor families need to live with many others. There are so many people in there that you need to step over them. They have trouble gettting enough food and shelter areas for the people. -
Labor Day holiday created
The first Labor Day was created in New York. This had to do with the Labor Union. This was originally celebrated as a "workingmens" holiday. The idea was soon spread and turned into a national holiday. -
American Federation of Labor (AFL) formed
This was organized in 1886. It was used to focused on better working conditions, and better pay. The union put labels on produced items, which were craft oriented. -
Haymarket Square Riot
This riot had police coming to break up the fight. Workers in Chicago wanted a eight hour day. This was the reason for the riot. The anarchists were blamed for violence. Eight police men died and there were one hundred injures! They public thought that the anarchists and unions were the problem. -
Homestead Strike
This strike started on June 30, 1892. On July 6, 1892 the battle between strikers and private security agents started. It was one of the most serious strikes in US history. This occurred at the Homestead Steel Works in the Pittsburgh area. -
The Pullman Strike
The company bought the town of Pullman so that they would rent homes to their workers. The owner was George M. Pullman. The rents were very high Pullman refused to lower the rents. This is what led to the strike. This stoped transportation from Chicago to West Coast. The union leaaders were arrested and imprisoned; because they sided with the workers and wouldn't send in military troops. -
Noble Order of the Knights of Labor formed
This event was organized by Philadelphia garment workers. It occured in 1869. It was opened to farmers, merchants and wage earners. They were required to work eight hour days and made equal pay for equal work. Another thing they had were abolition of child labor. -
The Coal Strike
This strike was by the United mIne workers of America. they were in the anthracite coal fields of eastern Pennsylvania. This strike threatened to shut down the winter fuel supply to all cities. President Theodore Roosevelt became involved and suspened the strike. The strike never did start again. -
"The Jungle" written
The Jungle was a book that was written to explain to us about what happend in the meat packing industry. This meat industry hurt or even worst killed cows. They would chill them with the rest of the meat so they wouldn't be identified. The factory was also unsanitary and disgusting. There were many sickining things about this factory. One of them was they had filthy floors. They were never washed and filled with filth. Another, was they shoveled the meat with a dirty shovel. -
"The Bitter Cry of Childeren" written
During this time children had to work many unsafe jobs. These lead to decises and death. Many of the jobs are coal miners. They are exceedingly hard especially for twelve year olds who are doing ten hour days. They didn't get a very high pay. All that they got were 60cents. -
Pure Food and Drug Act passed
The Food and Drug act was started on June 30, 1906. The United States federal law was in charge of this act. They inspections on the meat products and forbade the manufature sale or transportation of adulterated food products. They couldn't sell or ship out things that were not passed by the federal law. -
Triangle Shirt Factory Fire
There was a massive fire on March 25, 1911; 275 girls flung themselfs off of the 9th floor landing on concrete. Many parents and family members had to come to identify the girls. There were 146 employees that had died becasue the fire. The ladders could only reach up to the 6th and 7th floor. -
The National Labor Relations Act passed (Wagner Act)
This act was pro labor. They had to power to punish unfair labor practices. They had the right to organize legally recognized. Because of this they created the National Labor Relations Board. -
GM Sit-down Strike
The strike was by General Motors employees. This shut down plant operations in Flint, Michigan and other cities. This action against GM brought the tactic of sit down strikes and their effectiveness to the attention of fthe general public. For this strike you sit in your office without doing work and make sure no work is being done. -
Fair Labor Standards Act passed
The fair labor act was regulated of child labor in 1938. For the first time there was minimum ages of employment. Meaning that you had to be a certain age to work. You couldn't send a ten year old in a mining facility. They also had a certain amount of hours that a child could work. There were limits being set. -
Steel Strike
This strike was by the United Steelworkers of America verses U.S. steel and nine other steelmakers. Harry S. Truman nationalized the American steel industry before the workers walked out. the steel companies sued to regain control of their facilities. The worker won a wage increase. The strike lasted 53 days. -
Congress of Industrial Organization formed
This was a part of the AFL until 1935. The reason that it broke away was becasue it advocated organization along industrial lines rather than craft lines. It reintegrated into the AFL in 1955, -
Major League baseball strike
The baseball players wanted a $500,000 increase in their pension fund. They also wanted to add salary arbitration to the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The strike lasted 13 days and there were 86 baseball games missed. These games were never reschuled because the league refused to pay them for these games. -
New York City Transit Strike
This strike was in New York City, called the Transport Workers Union Local 100 (TWU). There were negotiations going on for a new contract over new pensions, retirement and wage increase. Millions of commuters were affected.
