Commonly referred to as the kickstarter for the Hudson River School that focused on landscapes from the Hudson River Valley, Thomas Cole was a first generation Hudson River Valley artist that discarded the belief that only "history, allegory, portraiture and religion" were the proper topics for professional artists.

While the Hudson River School never had an institute or "written guidelines, membership lists, regular meeting times, etc.," they were a collective group of artists of the same mindset. Despite the misleading title, it was arguably coined by a critic chiding the artists for staying in mainly a single region.
