  • WW1 starts

    WW1, formerly known as the “Great War”, started when the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Austria-Hungary.
  • Lusitania sinks

    Lusitania sinks
    The Lusitania was a British ship that was attacked and sunk by the Germans during WW1. This was one of the factors towards the U.S.’s decision to join the war.
  • The Great Migration

    The Great Migration
    Many African Americans (approximately 6 million) decided to move north during the timeframe of 1916-1970.
  • First woman elected to U.S. Congress

    First woman elected to U.S. Congress
    Jeannette Pickering Rankin was the first woman elected to Congress in 1916. She ran under the Republican Party and supported women’s suffrage.
  • Selective Service Act

    The Selective Service Act allowed the government to create a draft to increase the number of soldiers in the army.
  • Russian Revolution

    Lenin led the revolution that overthrew the Russian government because of its corrupt leadership and poor fighting in the war.
  • Espionage Act

    The Espionage Act was created to punish people who interfered with the war or supported enemies during the war.
  • Sedition Act

    This act extended the Espionage Act and allowed more actions, such as negative opinions towards the war, to be punished.
  • Influenza Pandemic

    The Spanish flu killed many soldiers due to the horrible conditions in the trenches where they fought and lived. It affected almost 1/3 of the world’s population.
  • Wilson’s 14 Points Speech

    The 14 Points Speech described his ideas towards peace to end the war. He proposed his ideas to Congress, but more importantly, they influenced the Treaty of Versailles.

    On November 11, 1918, Germany signed an Armistice to agree to stop fighting. This was the end of the “Great War.”

    This court case was ruled by the US Supreme Court on March 3, 1919. It discussed the First Amendment and the Espionage Act, and it ruled that supporting the resistance of the draft was a criminal offense.

    US Senate rejects Treaty of Versailles
    The Senate rejected the Treaty because some thought that America would lose its independence to the League of Nations.

    Harding was elected president in 1920, and served until his death on August 2, 1923.
  • Teapot Dome Scandal

    This scandal occurred during the Harding administration and throughout the 1920s. His Secretary of the Interior, Albert Fall, leased oil reserves that belonged to the navy to other companies in exchange for money.

    The Amendment was ratified on August 18, 1920, and it allowed women to vote.

    Amelia Earhart buys first plane
    Amelia Earhart bought her first plane in 1921 and earned her pilot’s license two years later.
