    The allies' attack that began at Salerno, and the Southern tip, in the attempt to gain ground and make way through Italy for access to Germany. After Italy's dictator Mussolini waived the flag of truce, the Germans would be called to defend Italy in order to stop the allies from gaining access because of the breaking down of the defense Italians provided.
