  • Marbury V. Madison

    Marbury V. Madison
    William Marbury was a recipient to justice of the peace and was appointed by president John Adams. The new president came in and said that he could not be a justice of the peace and Marbury went to the supreme court. The court ruled in his favor. This was the first time that the supreme court was used and it defined the courts power.
  • McCullouch V.Maryland

    McCullouch V.Maryland
    The state wanted to charge a federal band and a cashier at the bank named James McCullouch sued. The court ruled in his favor and they said that the states cannot tax a fedral organizaton. This case made it clear that congress has powers that are not stated in the constitution.
  • Dread Scott V. Sandford

    Dread Scott V. Sandford
    Dread Scott was a slave that lived in a free state. After his slave owner died he sued his wife saying that since he lived in a free state he was free. The court ruled in favor of Sandford because the government could not interfare with property unless there was taxes invloved. As a result of this case they created the Missouri Compromise that split the country into slave states and free states.
  • Plessy V. Fegrueson

    Plessy V. Fegrueson
    Homer Plessy was 1/8th black and wanted to challenge segregation laws on trains by sitting in the white only section. When he was arrested and charged he went to the Supreme Court and they ruled in his favor. This was the first case that challenged segregation laws and made other people want segregation to end.
  • Korematsu V. U.S.

    Korematsu V.  U.S.
    Instead of going to the interment camp as ordered, Fred Korematsu ran away. When he was found he was charged and he appealed to the supreme court. The court ruled in favor of the U.S.executive orders were put in place to protect the home land. This case had a negagive affec on America and made us look bad
  • Brown V. Board of Education

    Brown V. Board of Education
    Linda Brown was denied to go to a white school and her parents sued first to local courts then to the Supreme Court. They ruled in favor of Brown stating that seprate schoold are not equal. This case ended segregated schools nationwide.
  • Mapp V. Ohio

    Mapp V. Ohio
    The police created a fake search warrant and searched Dollree Mapp's home. They found pornographic material that went against the laws in Ohio and she was charged and was sentenced to jail time. She questioned the legality of the search warrant and took her case to the Supreme Court. The court ruled in her favor saying that without a legal search warrant any thing founed is inadmissible. This made law enforcement be more careful with search and seizures
  • Gideon V. Wainwright

    Gideon V. Wainwright
    Clarence Gideon was accused and charged for breaking into a pool room. Gideon did not have legal representation during hs case and lost and had to face jail time. He worte to the Supreme Court explaining that he had no legal experience and he asked for a retrial with legal representation. Gideon able to get wat he wanted and was founed innocent duing his retrial. From Gideon's situation everyone is given legal representation appointed by the court.
  • Miranda V. Arizona

    Miranda V. Arizona
    Ernesto Miranda was arrested and question but was not told his right to remian silent or his right to legal representation. Miranda confessed to the crime in question but his lawyer argued since he was not read his rights the confession was legal. They went to the Suprene Court and the court ruled in favor of Miranda. This case made it nessicary for police to read citizens their rights amoung arrest.
  • Tinker V.Des Moines

    Tinker V.Des Moines
    John and Marybeth Tinker wore black armbands to school to protest American involvement in the Vietnam war and they were supended for doing so. Their parents sued the school claiming that their first amendment rights were violated. The court ruled in the favor of Tinker and this gave students free speech in school as long as it does not disrupt the learning enviroment.
  • Roe V. Wade

    Roe V. Wade
    Jane Roe was unmarried and pregnant and she wanted to terminate her pregnancy but Texas and it was a felony to abort a fetus unless it threatened the life of the mother. Roe filed a suit against Wade the district attorney of Dallas County. She said that it violated her right to privacy and personal liberty. The court ruled in favor of Roe and it made abortion legal everywhere in the United States.
  • NJ V. TLO

    NJ V. TLO
    A New Jersey high school student was accused smoking in the bathroom. She was called to the office and her purse was searched. In her purse there was marijuana and her parents were called. They felt the search for cigarettes was not justified and went to the Supreme Court. They ruled in favor of TLO and it was proven that students cannot undergo unreasonlable searches even though they are in school.
  • Hazelwood V. Kuhlmeier

    Hazelwood V. Kuhlmeier
    The Hazelwood school news paper was student written. During the editing process the principal tore out 2 pages due to sensitive content and because he wanted to make the deadline. The students felt that the what the principal did what he did went against their first amendment rights. The court ruled in favor of the principal and said that he could restrict their speech
  • Texas V. Johnson

    Texas V. Johnson
    Gregory Johnson burned a flag and was charged. He went to the Supreme Court and they ruled in his favor saying that it is symbolic speech. This made people want to create a constutional amendment prohibiting flag burning but it did not work
