    Vocational Rehabilitation Act (VRA)
    Defines handicapped person
    Defines appropriate education
    Prohibits discrimination of people with disabilties in federally funded programs (schools, social and health services)
    This is an important piece of legislation becasue it acknowledged that people with disabiltities need a place in schools and society

    Requires states to provide a free and appropriate education for children with disabilities 5-18
    Established IEPS (Individualized education plans)
    Defined LRE's (Least resrtictive environment)

    Americans with Disabilties Act (ADA)
    Prohibits discrimination of people with disabilities in the private sector
    Protects equal opportunity to employment and public services, accomodations, transportation, and telecommunications

  • Individuals with Disabilties Education Act (IDEA) (Public-Law 105-17)

    Requires that students with disabiltities continue to recieve services even if they are expelled from school
    Developmental delay category can be pushed to 9 yrs
    Special Ed staff allowed to assist main satff when neccesaary
    Requires Gen ed teacher to take part in IEP
    Requires that stduents with disabilites participate in state and district assessments

  • No Child Left Behind (NCLB)

    No Child Left Behind (NCLB)
    Improves performance of elementary and secondary schools by increasing school, district and state accountability for all students including those from minortiy populations and those with special needs.
    Provides mores flexibility in state use of funds as long as standards of accountabiltiy are met
    Offers school choice for those enrolled in "failing schools"
    Implements early reading interventions

  • Individuals with Disabilties Education Improvement Act (IDEIA)

    Individuals with Disabilties Education Improvement Act (IDEIA)
    Extends special education services to include, social work, assitive technology, and rehab services
    Extends provisions for due process and confidentiality for students and parents
    Autism and TBI added under disability
    Requires states to provide bilingual progras for students with disabilities
    Provides and trains students for transitional work
    Requires individualized transition plans for each student by the time they are 16
